Cafe con Leche: Conversation on Skin Color

Join in a small, intimate conversation on the reflection of skin color.

Several years ago I began a project called Cafe con Leche. The project invites community members to mix coffee with milk to match their skin color. After the activity, we have a conversation about what comes up for people at the table. I’ve been invited to bring the project to schools, galleries, homes, and other institutions. The conversation always changes depending on who is present. This Sunday I am inviting my community to join me in conversation and reflection on the events we have witnessed and experienced these last weeks and beyond.

This Sunday, I will host an online Café con Leche session at 10am PST. There will be room for 4-8 participants. If you would like to attend please send me an email. carmina@carminaeliason.com

Here's what I need you to know about this session:

- This is the first time I will offer the session via video chat. I appreciate your patience as we figure out how to do this.

- The session is a space for conversation on the reflection of skin color and will invite vulnerability and listening to the experiences of others.

- I am not intending this space to be for one particular kind of group or experience level. If you don't have any experience talking about skin color, please attend. If you have a lot of experience, please attend. I invite the group to be of different experiences because when we go out in the world, that's what we are faced with.

- I will not be offering any solutions or calls to action for this session, except this: White community members can't be silent about racism anymore.

- The conversation is intended for individuals to reflect alongside other individuals on their own journeys. You can only work on yourself and how you show up in the world, do not sign up if you want to "fix" everyone else.

- The conversation might get messy, but the point is to practice saying what needs to be said and to reflect on our experiences out loud.

- If you don't know me very well: I am half Mexican, but present as white. I will tell share my story briefly at the beginning to tell you why I started the project. But the project isn't about me. It's about you showing up to do your own work.
